"When people on airplanes ask me what I do, I used to say I was a physicist, which ended the discussion. I once said I was a cosmologist, but they started asking me about makeup, and the title 'astronomer' gets confused with astrologer. Now I say I make maps."
If you’re a physics buff then you might recognize the above quote as one from Margaret Geller, astrophysicist and author of Einstein-esque zingers. We’re physics buffs at CartoDB. Half of our Community Team earned its formal education in a field that studies the physical properties and phenomena of our world. This makes sense, since folks who build tools to map humanity understandably stem from a fascination with flux in the physical topography of our universe. With the addition of Stuart Lynn, our team of hackers grows to accommodate a pretty brilliant and inquisitive scientist with a background in planet tracking, climate mapping, and studying ‘spooky matter’ of galactic proportions.
Read on to get to know our newest Map Scientist at CartoDB!

We’re excited to introduce our latest addition to our Madrid team, Jorge Sanz! Jorge is based on our Madrid office and will be helping CartoDB users on complex projects as solution architect.

Please read/sing along in the tune of the funky sounds of DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Now, this is a story all about how CartoDB teamed up with another Andrew/ Andrew with a T - and brought him to the Sales Engineering team.
CartoDB’s newly hired Andrew Thompson joined the Sales Engineering team in NYC last month. AT is fascinated by cities and town infrastructure - he studied ‘Growth and Structure of Cities.’ AT also likes board games (I present the friendly challenge of ‘longest road!’). Thompson can be found all weather bike commuting (hopefully not from Philly, where he lives, to NYC), engrossed in the travel readings of Bill Bryson, or hanging out with some Quakers in the Quaker State. If you were wondering if he knew a very fresh member of royalty that was born and raised in West Philadelphia…you’ll just have to ask him.

We are happy to announce Antonio Zamorano is joining CartoDB team as Systems Engineer. He will be mostly helping the team automating tasks and scaling the platform to its next level.

When Sade sang in ‘Smooth Operator’ – “Coast to coast, LA to Chicago” – she obviously hadn’t consulted a map.
For starters, L.A. - Los Angeles (not to be confused by the abbreviation of Louisiana, a southern U.S. state) is on the coast but what about Chicago? Only if you count the coast of Lake Michigan.

We’re excited to introduce our latest addition to our NYC team, Brittany Micek! Brittany is going to be working in the Community team as a Content Writer.

It only takes a little bit of time working in the geospatial industry before you hear the name, Paul Ramsey. His work on PostGIS and helping to cultivate an amazing community around the open source geospatial technology is humbling. Beyond that though, a simple scan of his blog posts and you’ll see that he thinks deeply about not only open source, but how it does and should affect many aspects of business and government. He can move from a conversation about personally identifiable information to a conversation about the procurement process of local governments with impressive ease.
We have been longtime fans of Paul and finally today, get to announce that he is joining us here at CartoDB. To share this moment with you, we thought we would present a special blog post… 5 Questions with Paul Ramsey.
-

Please give a hearty welcome to Santiago.
He’s the newest member to the CartoDB team. Coming from a background as diverse as his interests, he will be using his skills to make maps that peel away the layers of our complex world with the goal of thinking about space, realities, and the potential maps have for many different user groups. All of that is fitting because his title at CartoDB is Data Story Intern.
